ALL bright light sources are dangerous to the tube. Even the PAQ-4B/C can damage the image tube. That is why they are only to be turned on when ready to fire, and then immediately turned off. However, for the military, replacing an image tube with a burn, is no big deal if it helps get the mission accomplished and reduces casualties. Keep in mind these "tools" are designed for a "military end-user" not commercial. It is an after thought that the 7B's are sold commercially. In addition, the PAQ-4B/C is restricted to FEDERAL (and law enforcement) agencies. It is NOT TO BE SOLD or POSSESSED by the public.
The LIF is to offer SOME protection from enemy attempts to disable the starlight system. It is not a solution, only a minor precaution.
